Wix build machine

Gilles QUERRET-3
Hello,

I'm trying to rebuild Wix after a quite simple modification, so I tried to setup a job in Jenkins. Instructions are available here : http://neilsleightholm.blogspot.fr/2008/10/how-to-create-wix-build-machine.html but it seems they are outdated.
Is there an updated document on how to setup a wix build machine (on Jenkins or any other CI server) ?

Thanks,

If you find issues with that documentation: feel free to comment on those here, or file an issue.

Good luck!

Re: Wix build machine

Hi Robert,

As the build server is not configured for C/C# jobs, I had to install the Windows SDK for Win 7 (as mentioned on the page), but didn't install Visual Studio. I executed the sn.exe command line, then triggered the job. Git checks out the 'develop' branch, then triggers MSBuild from the Win SDK prompt (setenv.cmd /x86 /2008).
I got a first message saying that SDK couldn't be found ; a quick and dirty change was to change the registry HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\V7.1 to V7.1A (according to tools/wixbuild.props).
Then second problem with mspdb100.dll which couldn't be found : fixed by adding C:\Program Files\Visual Studio 10\Common7\IDE to the PATH

I then have a problem with :
"Z:\Jenkins\workspace\Wix3\wix.proj" (default target) (1) ->
"Z:\Jenkins\workspace\Wix3\src\dtf\dtf.proj" (default target) (14) ->
"Z:\Jenkins\workspace\Wix3\src\dtf\Tools\Tools.proj" (default target) (24) ->
"Z:\Jenkins\workspace\Wix3\src\dtf\Tools\SfxCA\SfxCA.vcxproj" (default target) (26) ->
(PrepareForBuild target) ->
  C:\Program Files (x86)\MSBuild\Microsoft.Cpp\v4.0\Microsoft.CppBuild.targets(297,5): warning MSB8003: Could not find WindowsSDKDir variable from the registry. TargetFrameworkVersion or PlatformToolset may be set to an invalid version number. [Z:\Jenkins\workspace\Wix3\src\dtf\Tools\SfxCA\SfxCA.vcxproj]

Still trying to find where this comes from, but I'd be glad if anybody has an idea ! And sorry, I'm not a C/C# developer, so it may be a stupid question...

Re: Wix build machine

Using /p:PlatformToolset=Windows7.1SDK solves this problem. Now getting new ones :
First is about Microsoft.VisualStudio.QualityTools.UnitTestFramework assembly which is not found. I will skip unit tests for now
The second one is LINK : fatal error LNK1181: cannot open input file 'dutil.lib' [Z:\Jenkins\workspace\Wix3\src\dtf\Tools\SfxCA\SfxCA.vcxproj]. I'm stuck on this one...

Re: Wix build machine

SeanHall
In src/libs/libs_multitarget.proj, copy one of the item groups and change the condition to something like '$(PlatformToolset)'=='Windows7.1SDK' (and modify the PlatformToolset property for each project).

Looking at the build file from v3.6, the current documentation seems to leave out that WiX requires Visual C++ Express (or Visual Studio) along with the platform SDK.  Should we update the documentation, or add support for building with just the platform SDK?

The former. Windows SDKs no longer include build tools.
